Inlägg av poca »

Hello!
I have a 6 weeks old baby at home and I was wondering when was, according to you, the best age to start the cure?
Thanks in advance for your answer!

I understood it might be 4 months old, but I was wondering if something can be done earlier than that (can't a 2 months old baby sleep 8 hours a night according to Anna Wahlgren?).

Hello poca,

We have something called the "Standard Model" for children under the age of 4-5 months, this is a way to get on track without doing a cure at 4-5 months if you wish.

For more infor about that you need the book "For the love of children" Annas first childrens book where everything is described in detail.

To answer your question, yes it is earliest at 4-months to do the cure, with solid foods, and you get a 12 hour night.

A 2 month old baby with enough food, activity and correct sleep (a schedule) can sleep for 8 hours without food.

So I suggest you try and buy or borrow "For the love of children"

Hej!

Thanks for your quick reply!

She already did once a break of 6,5 hours between breastfeeding (and 4 hours she do "quite often", same as every 2 hours though :-/ ).

I'll get the book asap then! :))

Hi Poca :D

Yes, you will not regret getting your copy of For the Love of Children! Anna writes about all ages, up to 16 years old and it is very interesting indeed.

Get the book, enjoy reading it, and don't hesitate to get back to us if you have any questions.

Hi!
I ordered the book and I can't wait to receive it to read it... I'm getting really impatient now as I didn't know about this "standard method" for the younger ones!
Also I was planning to get the book anyway for my oldest son who is turning 3 this week :)
I really wonder how we can build a good schedule with a sibling going to daycare only 15 hours a week :/
I'll read and come back to you for advices I guess! :)

No worries :D We are many who have managed to get the daily routines to be smooth and fun with little brothers and sisters around. Don't forget Anna gave birth to 9 children and wrote this book based on her experience as a mother at home, with the kids at home.

You will also get much on the subject of the "terrible two's" and get a good understanding (and some lifehacks) on how to deal with these little ones.

While you're waiting for the book, try to focus on feeding your daughter. The more you eat the better you sleep, basicly.

Hello again!

Book received by now and I've started the standard method (tried at least).
Basically, the process that should take in total 1,5 hours goes much faster (a little more than 1 hour) and baby is not always going to sleep after that.
So I have a few questions!

It looks more or less like this so far:
- Breast 1, burp, breast 1 again, burp, change diaper takes about 30 minutes.
- Socialization about 15 minutes. After she gets grumpy most of the time.
- Breast 2, burp about 15 minutes
- Sleep (after 10 minutes... Or not...)

=> sometimes, she just doesn't want to sleep at all and start crying as soon as she is in the bed.
I tried to feed more or to calm her down in the arms (I understood I shouldn't do that but when the feeding more emergency plan is not working...) and she doesn't necessarily fall asleep at all.
Some other times, she fall asleep fast but wake up quickly and really often.
I'm lost.
She's basically waking up all the time and really fast, in the "normal" case of the standard method AND in the case of emergency extra feeding due to crying :/

From the beginning, and in general, she doesn't have a good deep sleep.
It's happening very rarely.
It's very tiring for me and even more for her indeed (she really seems to fight not to sleep sometimes).
I've been feeding her a lot lot lot the last days until I could read more about the standard method and apply it, but it didn't seems to influenced her sleeping behavior so far...
She still have this very light sleep and sleep a few minutes here and there (5, 10 or 15 minutes, sometimes up to 45 minutes, not more really).
She sleeps a little more in a row at night (2 hours) but never goes back to sleep easily after eating... (Usually the first meal during night she goes back to sleep quite fast, but second time average is 2 hours and it can take up to 3 hours.... :((( ).
Also, sometimes the pacifier seems necessary with her as she needs to suck but don't want to it after I proposed her the breast many many times...

I really don't know how to handle this and I haven't find in the book how to handle it (the contemplating method doesn't work good on her during day, and I don't know what to do at night really as I guess it should stay dark).

Help please!! :)
Thanks in advance!

Hi, congrats to the book! In the very end of the book there is a "Part five" Problems? Food and Problems? Sleep. Read these as well including again about the 2 month old.

Is she sleeping on her stomach with a sleep apnea alarm? This is really a BIG key! Also put her in the tram/stroller to sleep all the sleep including the night. It is easier to just pull the tram to calm her down. Using a pacifier is fine for the first 4 months if they need a bit more sucking to sleep.

Another trick is to heat up the tram/stroller so that it is warm when you put her there on her belly!

Keep up trying to feed her as much as possible, sometimes a few needs to use just a tad of formula in a bottle to knock the baby out for sleep. (Just a thought).

Now give everything 1-2 weeks to get the new routines in place. Keep reading the book same chapter over and over again. :D

Hi!

Just read the parts you mentioned by now :D

Before I continue with some more questions, I wanted to put down a schedule and I'm struggling there: so baby is a little more than 7 weeks now, so I guess it's best to create a good schedule for a 2 months old baby and start for good the method in a few days (so 8 hours per night).
However, I struggle to put a schedule on the paper as I've a toddler at home too and I want to have a good schedule that will fit the best the all family.
Those 15 hours a week in daycare are making things a little complicated indeed (9:00-14:00)
How people deal with that?
I feel that my older boy should get quality time when I pick him up in the afternoon and also when I prepare him to go to daycare in the morning.

I would very much appreciate some tips here before I get going! :)

Hi!

I tried to prepare a schedule as follow and I started today with the meal at 16:30 :D :D :D
I'm really motivated :D and a little scared with the night coming soon, but confident!

Meal 5:30 to 7 Sleep 7 to 9
Meal 9 to 10:30 sleep 10:30 to 12:30
Meal 12:30 to 14 sleep 14 to 16:30
Meal 16:30 to 18:00 sleep 18 to 20
Meal 20 to 21:30 sleep 21:30 to 5:30
=> Sleep at night 8h and total per day 16:30

What do you say?

PS: so far she requested to fall asleep at 18, it took about 20 minutes and woke up a few times but stayed in the stroller and went back to sleep :D

Hi!

At two months the night should be 11 or 12 hours with 3 naps in the day. Do you want the morning to be 5,30( ) then the bedtime must be 16,30 or 17,30. The first nap should come after 1,5-2 hours. A usual nap-schedual for 2-moths is 1,5 h-2h-1,5h. It´s not given that she can handle 8 hours without food at night but it´s a good goal. My boys have slept about 5-6 hours without food at that age. I think you should start with 2 feedings at night, the first after 6 hours and the second about three hours before the wakeuptime. If you notice that she isn´t really that hungry at the first feed then you can skip it IF you are confident that you can handle the tools to make her fall back to sleep herself.

Hi
Ok you're confusing me here... in the book FTLOC it's written that a 2 months old is suppose to sleep at night 8 hours, not 11-12 hours... ?!!
My baby girl has managed already to wait 7 hours between 2 feelings at night already twice so far so I thought the 8 hours at night recommended in the book totally make sense!
And about the start of the day at 5:30, it's not that I want it badly, it's just that I took at the letter Anna's advices from the book and tried to adapt it to my family schedule (mainly the preschool schedule that I found really unfair for both older and younger kid actually but that's another story :p !)

Hi poca,

Let me try to clarify it as much as I can. :D

So 8 hours with out food night doesn't mean "8 hour night", it just means that the baby can sleep for 8 hours without food. But the whole night should now start to be more 11-12 hours. As an example my schedule at 2 months was as follows:

Night 19-07 with a nightmeal at around 03-04 (some have it at 23) At this time you can have it in their sleep. So you set an alarm and pre-come them so they don't need to wake up to get food.

So, my schedule was:
Night 19-07
Morning nap 8.30-10.00
Midday nap 11.30-13.30
Afternoon nap (if possible) 15.30-17.00
If the afternoon nap don't work many have two smaller naps of 45 min. 2x45

Does your toddler have to go to daycare? The thing is that Anna wrote the book for mothers that have their small children home. So I do understand you want things to fit that schedule. My son didn't start daycare until he was 3 years old.
If he really really needs to go, what are his times?

:D We are here to assist you and help you. I understand your frustration I actually wrote my first time here when my son was 2 months as well because of the book. Things will work out and you are doing a good job!

Re: When starting the cure?

Hi TorsMama!

Ok, now I understand the 11/12 hours night :D
I manage so far to make my schedule work with my little girl even if I'll have to adjust it!
Last night she "survived" without food as planed in my schedule (see my previous message) between 21:30 to 5:30 and all the rest of the day goes according to plan so far.

If I understand correctly, I should adjust the night to start with.
By the way, how are we suppose to give them food without waking her up?? I don't see how I can do that with her, if she sleep, she sleep and don't care about food... :?

Then, back to my schedule :P
My 3 years old is going to dagis from 9 to 14, so I was thinking that it would be great to have quality time with him when I prepare him in the morning (so I can prepare him between at least 7:30 and 9) and when I pick him up at 14 (to 16:30 to have time to play with him).
That's why I built my schedule like that so far:

Meal 5:30 to 7 Sleep 7 to 9
Meal 9 to 10:30 sleep 10:30 to 12:30
Meal 12:30 to 14 sleep 14 to 16:30
Meal 16:30 to 18:00 sleep 18 to 20
Meal 20 to 21:30 sleep 21:30 to 5:30
=> Sleep at night 8h and total per day 16:30

To adjust it to your planing I just sneezed it with starting the night 2 hours later, that would be :
Meal 9:00 to 10:30 (1,5h) Sleep 10:30 to 12:30 (2h)
Meal 12:30 to 14:00 (1,5h) Sleep 14 to 16:00 (2h)
Meal 16:00 to 17:30 (1,5h) Sleep 17:30 to 19:00 (1,5h)
Meal 19:00 to 21:00 Sleep 21:00 to 9:00 (so 12 hours) with a short night meal somewhere (when would be the best then?)
=> Sleep at night 12h and total per day 17,5h (isn't that too much per day?)
What do you say?
 Big Brother 2013-09 (GNS 2015)
 Little Sister 2016-08 started standard model on 2016-10-06 (7 weeks old), did her first 10 hours night on 2016-10-29 (10 weeks old) after 4 weeks of training \:D/ work in progress
